Built in 1899 as a luxury resort hotel, it continues to stand as a symbol of the early 1900s of northern Michigan's tourism in its infancy. There were some 20 luxury resort hotels built in 1899 and this is the only one still in operation, but it is believed to be haunted by a woman who committed suicide there in 1902. Haunted sightings have included the woman in the garden looking at the lake.

    Booked a room at the Stafford Perry Hotel, not knowing it was haunted. After hearing that people have experienced things, we decided to bring an EMF reader. Once there, I decided to go out into the hallway and just walk with the EMF. All was quiet until I got half way down the hall and the meter went off. I started to ask the usual yes and no questions. It answered. I decided to head back to the room to tell my friend that I ran into a ghost and it followed me back. But it would not come in the room. I continued to ask questions and determined that it was a woman. I kindly asked that she stay outside my room, but my friend told her to come back and visit at night! And she did. I woke up to him screaming in his sleep and after I finally woke him up, he told me his dream about an old lady named Doris who was standing at the door and she kept getting closer and closer and he was terrified. Later we found out that the supposed ghost that is there is named Doris. We walked all around this hotel and my meter went off at many locations. Got pictures of cool orbs as well.
